Rafoxanide belongs to the group of halogenated salicylanilide and is found to be highly effective against mature and immature stages (older than 6 weeks) of fluke in sheep, goat and cattle.

It acts by uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation in the cell mitochondria, which disturbs the production of ATP, the cellular “fuel” his seems to occur through suppression of the activity of succinate dehydrogenase and fumarate reductase, pharmacokinetic parameter suggests that it undergoes extensive plasma protein binding, also remain inactive until ingested by the parasite and has long elimination half life time.

Unlike many other anthelmintics (e.g. imidazothiazoles, benzimidazoles, te trahydropyrimidines), rafoxanide has a residual effect, i.e. it not only kills the parasites present in the host at the time of treatment, but protects against re-infestation for a period of time (up to several weeks)
